Taking Backstories to a Whole New Level

One of the things I’ve been doing recently in lieu of posting more regularly here, is getting back to writing fiction.

This relates very much to gaming, specifically to Tim’s Velvet Edge game I’ve written about previously.  We reached a pretty big conclusion which ended with three PCs (including poor Jane!) dead.  The game then took a short break and jumped forward twenty years or so in game time.

At the same time, I had been working on an idea for a novel, which I finished a first draft of, about Sara Barnes, college student who had the ability to see other people’s dreams; one of who was a serial killer whom she felt compelled to find and stop, since she was the only “witness” to his crimes.

When the game restarted, I decided to use Sara (no longer a college student; the version of her that became my PC was ten years older and a doctor by that point) as a character.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, I revisited that first draft of Sara’s story and I’ve been rewriting it, and it’s now a 90,000 word novel.  It still needs plenty of rewriting, but I’m very happy to at least gotten to this point.  I’ll probably post a little excerpt up here in a little while.
